Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello, Inc, the wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals, Inc announced plans to boost the production volume of ICROS (a surface protective tape used in silicon wafer back-grinding process for the manufacturer of ICs).

The proposed expansion of the plant will more than double the existing unit capacity to 7.6 million square meters per year. The company plans to initiate construction activity in August 2021 and to complete the construction by October 2023.

According to Mitsui Chemicals, it is the world’s largest tape-producing company, accounting for around 40% share of global markets. Strong demand for 5G wireless service chips and electrified vehicles is encouraging demand for chips, which will support the protective tape market. Accordingly, the company plans to witness strong sales from the expansion initiative.

ICROS tape is widely used in the silicon wafer backgrinding process. It integrates Mitsui Chemicals’ resin-derived polymer science technology and Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello’s sophisticated film processing technology.
