Malaysia’s PETRONAS Chemicals Group (PCG) announced plans to start full operations of petrochemical plants at the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in 2021. The company plans to increase the total production capacity from 12.8 mtpa to 14.6 mtpa.

Other units in the Pengerang Integrated Complex include LLDPE unit (350 thousand tonnes capacity), HDPE unit (400 thousand tonnes capacity), Propylene unit (900 thousand tonnes capacity), monoethylene glycol plant (800 thousand tonnes capacity), and isononanol (250 thousand tonnes capacity).

Further, the plant operator also signed an agreement with LG Chem in 2020 to construct a 200 thousand tonnes nitrile butadiene latex (NBL) plant. The unit is scheduled for commencement of operations in 2023.

To cater to the burgeoning demand from personal care, automotive, healthcare, and other end-user industries, the company is planning to close Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) for more specialty chemical manufacturing units in the complex.

PCG expects the Pengerang Integrated Complex to account for 10% to 15% of the company’s total revenue in 2022 when the complex becomes fully operational.
