Biomass RDF and SRF Market Size, Share, Outlook

The global Biomass RDF and SRF market is valued at US$2,457.2 million in 2022. The rapid spread of secondary fuel use in end-user applications will drive the demand for the Biomass RDF and SRF market. The global Biomass RDF and SRF forecast to register a 3.67% Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the forecast period from 2023 to 2030

Biomass RDF and SRF market analysis

Rapid economic development and population growth are supporting the volume of waste generation to increase steadily. Further, with high energy prices, the demand for RDF and SRF fuels is increasing significantly. In addition, to satisfy energy requirements, substitute fossil fuels, achieve CO2 targets, and other benefits, countries are investing in the development of RDF and SRF production facilities.

According to the IEA, global municipal waste generation is estimated at around 2.2 billion tons and is projected to reach 3.4 billion tons by 2050. The increasing emphasis on waste to energy (WtE) for processing both organic and inorganic waste supports the demand for RDF and SRF generation plants.

RDF and SRF are waste products with increased calorific value, reduced moisture content, more homogeneous particle size, and reduced ferrous and non-ferrous metal content compared to raw MSW.

Leading companies are processing food waste, paper and rubber products, fabric, plant matter, agricultural waste, and other biomass for generating secondary fuels.

Increasing use of biomass sources for the production of RDF and SRF fuels, strong growth in oil prices is encouraging the demand for secondary fuels, increasing Public Awareness of Waste Management, technological advancements in the Waste Management Process, and other factors drive the market outlook.

On the other hand, increased Volume and Complexity of Waste, High Cost of Installation of Processing and Recycling Municipal Solid Waste Plants, and others act as deterrents to market growth.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends- Increasing use of biomass sources for the production of RDF and SRF fuels

RDF is produced from biodegradable materials and has a lower calorific value than solid-recovered fuel. Amidst increasing demand for the simultaneous recovery of energy and the recycling of mineral resources, the demand for waste biomass is increasing steadily.

Some of the biomass sources for RDF and SRF fuels include-

  • Agricultural residues including diverse forms of crop waste such as bagasse, rice husk, straw, stem, leaves, shell, stover, peel, and pulp
  • Forestry, forest residues, and wood wastes coming from forests and sawmills, plywood mills, furniture shops, and other craft industries
  • Energy crops such as jatropha, willows, poplars, elephant grass, Napier grass, miscanthus, and switchgrass, sewage sludge
  • The Industrial waste includes the food industry, Pulp, and paper industry, airline and cruise ship industry, Palm oil mill effluent, and other industries

Market Drivers- Strong growth in oil prices is encouraging the demand for secondary fuels

The production of alternative fuels is quickly gaining traction across countries in the current high oil price environment. In 2022, the oil prices stood over $100 per barrel and the outlook also remains optimistic. The EIA forecasts the high oil prices to continue in 2023 and 2024- the Brent crude oil price will average $83 per barrel in 2023 and $77.57 per barrel in 2024. Amidst such high forecasts for oil prices, the market for secondary fuels including RDF and SRF remains high.

Further, strong demand for waste-derived fuels is supporting investments in R&D activities, for diverse applications including incineration plants, heating systems, power generation, CHP, cement kilns, and other uses.

Market Segmentation

Biomass RDF and SRF markets are categorized into Types, Applications, and regions

By Type, SRF has a strong Growth rate during the forecast period

Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) are a subset of the larger family of Refuse-Derived Fuels and are produced to a range of specifications to meet customer requirements. It is produced using mainly commercial waste with additional processing to improve quality and value.

The solid fuel prepared from non-hazardous waste acts as an alternative fuel to primary fossil fuels like coal, pet coke, or natural gas used in co-incineration facilities. The fuel type has less than 15% moisture content, with high calorific value, and is used in facilities such as cement kilns.

A wide range of end-user industries including cement kilns, coal-fired power plants, lime kilns, industrial boilers, and combined heat and power plants (CHP) opt for SRF fuels due to their high calorific value. In particular, the paper and pulp industry and cement manufacturing, which require a higher quality and more consistent product widely opt for SRF.

By Application, Cement Kilns has the highest market value accounting for more than half of the total market value

Rapid urbanization and industrialization trends support the demand for cement plants. With technological developments in the field of RDF and SRF, the cement industry has rapidly adopted secondary fuels. Economic benefits coupled with regulatory support drive the market size in cement plant applications.

The cement industry presents a significant potential market for RDF producers worldwide. RDF from biomass is an alternative fuel that partially replaces coal/pet coke in cement kilns. RDF is CO2-neutral, and accordingly, several cement companies are assessing the feasibility of deploying RDF and SRF for cement production.

SRF fuels are widely used for the clinker-burning process in the cement industry. However, high market costs, low production volumes, and an uncertain regulatory environment pose challenges to widespread adoption.

By Region, Europe held the dominant market share in 2022

The European region stood as the single largest market for Biomass RDF and SRF worldwide and is estimated to remain the largest market throughout the forecast period to 2030.

Germany is the leading market for RDF and SRF in Europe. The country has larger production of industrial steam and district heating, supporting the demand for efficient secondary fuels. Further, several cement companies are shifting to RDF and SRF to overcome the challenges of CO2 emissions.

The landfill diversion targets set by the Landfill Directive encourage waste management through other modes of recycling including the generation of RDF and SRF. The use of surplus production material, bulk waste, large packaging material, and unsorted commercial waste to generate refuse-derived fuel (RDF) of different qualities is widely observed in the country.

Improvements in areas of efficiency, taxation, and logistics are likely to support the long-term market outlook. RDF plants are built in the proximity of the end-users for processing household and commercial waste. The grate firing system widely opts in RDF plants in the country. Comparably high overall efficiencies of about 60% to 80% on average are reached by the plants in the country.

In addition to local production, increasing domestic demand is supporting the market for imports, predominantly from the UK, and also affecting export to Sweden, the Netherlands, and other countries.
