Upstream
Upstream explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas and develops unconventional, deepwater and LNG resources. Its major advantaged platforms include the Permian Basin, Guyana and LNG, which together accounted for 59% of company production during 2025. The business combines subsurface imaging, drilling and reservoir engineering with large-project execution and increasingly centralized operational monitoring. Production spans conventional and unconventional assets across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Africa and other resource regions. Its strategic role extends beyond upstream earnings because crude oil, natural gas and natural-gas liquids also provide feedstock options for ExxonMobil's refining and petrochemical manufacturing network.
Energy Products
Energy Products encompasses ExxonMobil's principal refining and fuels value chain, including gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum-based and lower-emission transportation products. The segment operates through integrated manufacturing facilities designed to upgrade crude and intermediate streams into higher-value products while responding to regional demand and refining margins. In 2025, worldwide refinery throughput averaged approximately 3.98 million barrels per day. The business is differentiated by refinery scale, conversion technology, feedstock flexibility and integration with adjacent petrochemical assets. This allows selected intermediates to move between fuel and chemicals value chains rather than treating refining and petrochemicals as completely separate manufacturing systems.
Chemical Products
Chemical Products includes olefins, polyethylene, polypropylene and performance chemicals used across packaging, automotive, consumer products, construction and industrial applications. ExxonMobil has increasingly emphasized high-value performance chemicals and differentiated polymer grades, with 2025 Chemical Products sales reaching 21.3 million metric tons. The segment benefits from direct integration with crackers and refineries and from polymer-process and catalyst expertise. Product differentiation extends beyond resin production into processing performance, downgauging, mechanical properties and application-specific qualification. Advanced recycling also complements the conventional polymer platform by converting difficult-to-recycle plastic waste into molecular feedstock suitable for producing new products through existing manufacturing infrastructure.
Specialty Products
Specialty Products contains higher-value businesses including lubricant basestocks and finished lubricants, specialty chemical products and emerging materials platforms. ExxonMobil is also developing Proxxima polyolefin thermoset resin systems, designed for applications requiring strength, corrosion resistance and lightweighting across infrastructure, automotive, coatings, subsea and wind-energy markets. Advanced carbon materials are another emerging platform, particularly synthetic graphite for lithium-ion battery anodes and energy-storage applications. Specialty Products therefore has a different commercial profile from commodity refining: formulation, material qualification, customer processing requirements and technical support play a greater role in product adoption and margin differentiation.
ExxonMobil Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
North America is central to ExxonMobil's integrated manufacturing and resource position. The U.S. Gulf Coast combines upstream feedstock access with major refining, olefins, polymers, lubricants and technology infrastructure. Baytown, Texas, includes a refinery, chemical plant, olefins plant, plastics operations and technology facilities, making it one of ExxonMobil's most integrated downstream clusters. Baton Rouge and Beaumont provide additional Gulf Coast refining and petrochemical capacity, while the Permian Basin forms a major upstream resource platform.
Asia-Pacific is anchored by Singapore, ExxonMobil's largest integrated manufacturing site. Its 592,000-barrel-per-day refinery is connected with the Singapore Chemical Plant through shared pipelines and feedstock streams, supporting fuels, aromatics, olefins, polymers and specialty products for Asia-Pacific customers. Huizhou, China, has become another strategically important Asian chemical platform, increasing the company's proximity to China's large polymer and performance-material customer base.
Europe remains significant through integrated assets such as Antwerp, Belgium, where the refinery is linked with petrochemical operations and supported by polyethylene plants in Zwijndrecht and Meerhout. Belgium also provides regional technology capabilities serving European applications. Overall, the footprint combines resource-oriented upstream locations with fewer, larger integrated refining and material-production clusters positioned close to feedstocks, export infrastructure and major industrial markets.
ExxonMobil Acquisitions, New Materials and Portfolio Transformation
Recent transformation has materially reshaped ExxonMobil's Upstream and Low Carbon Solutions positions. In November 2023, the company completed its US$4.9 billion all-stock acquisition of Denbury, adding carbon-management infrastructure and capabilities that support the development of a Gulf Coast carbon capture and storage business. In May 2024, ExxonMobil completed the acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources, more than doubling its Permian footprint and combining Pioneer's unconventional inventory with ExxonMobil's drilling, technology and project-development capabilities.
Portfolio investment has simultaneously expanded downstream chemicals and advanced materials. ExxonMobil's wholly owned China Chemical Complex started operations in 2025, including a steam cracker capable of producing up to 1.6 million tonnes of ethylene annually and substantial performance-polyethylene capacity. In September 2025, ExxonMobil agreed to acquire Superior Graphite's technology and U.S. assets, plus selected international offices, to accelerate its entry into advanced synthetic graphite for battery anodes. Circular-plastics investment has also advanced: the third advanced-recycling unit at Baytown is operational, giving the site capacity to process approximately 250 million pounds of plastic waste annually.
