Surventis Company Overview
Surventis is an independent global automotive coatings and surface-treatment company headquartered in Münster, Germany. The company officially began operating under the Surventis name on July 1, 2026, following the carve-out of BASF's former Coatings businesses. Its operations encompass automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinish systems and applied surface-treatment technologies for metal, plastic and glass substrates. Surventis serves automotive manufacturers, collision-repair businesses and industrial customers worldwide through coating formulations, pretreatment chemistry, color technologies and process-support capabilities. The company reports around €3.9 billion in annual sales, approximately 10,700 employees and more than 42,000 customers in over 140 countries.
Although Surventis is a newly established independent company, its technical and commercial base is not new. The business inherits more than a century of coatings expertise developed within BASF and predecessor organizations, together with established brands including Chemetall, Glasurit and R-M. Its strategic position is therefore different from that of a conventional start-up: Surventis begins independent operations with global manufacturing assets, long-standing OEM relationships, recognized refinish brands and established surface-treatment technologies. The principal change is ownership and strategic autonomy rather than the creation of an entirely new operating business.

Surventis' predecessor businesses generated approximately €3.7 billion of sales in 2025. The company's current approximately €3.9 billion annual-sales figure should therefore be treated as a company-stated current business metric rather than a standalone Surventis FY2025 financial result.
What Does Surventis Do?
Surventis operates across three closely connected areas of coatings and surface technology: Mobility Coatings, Refinish Coatings and Surface Treatment. This gives the company exposure to both original vehicle manufacturing and aftermarket repair, while Chemetall extends the portfolio upstream into substrate preparation and pretreatment.
Mobility Coatings
Mobility Coatings serves automotive OEMs with coating technologies used throughout vehicle paint systems. These include electrocoat, primer, basecoat and clearcoat technologies as well as color development and application-process expertise. BASF's former coatings business had long-standing relationships with global automotive manufacturers, and those technical platforms and customer relationships transferred to Surventis. The business is led by Patrick Zhao as Executive Vice President Mobility Coatings.
The competitive requirement goes beyond producing paint. Automotive coatings must operate consistently in high-throughput paint shops while meeting requirements for appearance, corrosion protection, cure performance, film properties and manufacturing productivity. This makes OEM qualification, application engineering and process support central to Surventis' position.
Refinish Coatings
Refinish Coatings addresses collision repair and automotive refinishing through established brands such as Glasurit and R-M, supported by digital technologies including Refinity. The business supplies coating systems used to reproduce original vehicle finishes while helping body shops manage color matching, application efficiency and repair-cycle productivity.
Color technology is a particularly important capability in refinish coatings because modern vehicles use increasingly complex pigments, effect finishes and multilayer coating structures. Surventis combines physical coatings with digital color and workflow technologies, training and technical support. Steve Arndt became Executive Vice President Refinish Coatings when the independent company launched.
Surface Treatment
Surface Treatment operates primarily through Chemetall, an established global brand in applied surface-treatment technology. The business develops products and processes used to clean, prepare, protect and modify metal, plastic and glass surfaces before or during subsequent manufacturing steps.
Applications extend beyond automobiles into aerospace, appliances, metal fabrication and other industrial markets. Surface-treatment chemistry can influence coating adhesion, corrosion resistance, process efficiency and finished-product quality. This gives Chemetall a different but complementary position to Surventis' coatings businesses: rather than supplying only the final coating layers, the company can participate in technologies used to prepare the underlying substrate.
Surventis Ownership and the BASF Coatings Carve-Out
Surventis was created through one of BASF's largest recent portfolio transactions. BASF and Carlyle announced their agreement in October 2025 and completed the transaction on June 30, 2026, after receiving required regulatory approvals. The transaction had an enterprise value of €7.7 billion, with BASF receiving approximately €5.8 billion in pre-tax cash proceeds.
The transferred business comprised BASF's automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinish coatings and surface treatment operations. Carlyle-managed funds, in partnership with Qatar Investment Authority, acquired majority ownership, while BASF retained a 40% equity interest. BASF will account for this remaining interest using the equity method from July 2026.
Importantly, BASF's former decorative paints business is not part of Surventis. BASF had separately divested that operation, and BASF stated that the Surventis transaction together with the decorative-paints sale valued the entire former Coatings division at €8.7 billion.
For readers evaluating Surventis, this distinction is important: the new company is fundamentally an automotive, refinish and industrial surface-technology company, not a broad architectural paints business.
Surventis Leadership and Independent Operating Model
Jens Luehring leads Surventis as Chief Executive Officer. The company established a new executive structure for independence that combines executives retained from BASF Coatings with external leaders experienced in chemicals, transformation and carve-outs. Michael Pontzen serves as CFO, while the operating businesses are led by Frank Naber for Surface Treatment, Patrick Zhao for Mobility Coatings and Steve Arndt for Refinish Coatings.
The structure also includes dedicated leadership for Mobility and Refinish operations, procurement, digital systems and transformation. This is strategically relevant because Surventis must now operate corporate functions that were previously supported within the wider BASF organization. At the same time, preserving experienced coatings and surface-treatment management provides continuity in customer relationships and manufacturing operations.
From an analyst perspective, the central strategic question is therefore not whether Surventis possesses an established market platform—it clearly does—but how effectively the independent company can use greater decision-making autonomy to improve operating performance, accelerate technology commercialization and allocate investment across its three core businesses.
Surventis Global Manufacturing and Customer Footprint
Surventis operates across Europe, North America, South America and Asia-Pacific, with more than 30 production sites and customer relationships spanning more than 140 countries. Its headquarters in Münster, Germany, is located at what the company describes as the world's largest integrated coatings manufacturing site.
The geographic network is particularly important in automotive coatings. Vehicle manufacturers require consistent material supply, localized technical service and rapid troubleshooting at paint shops, making proximity to automotive-production clusters strategically important. Refinish coatings require regional distribution, training and color-support infrastructure, while surface-treatment applications frequently involve direct technical interaction with customers' manufacturing lines.
Surventis' inherited network therefore provides an immediate advantage compared with a newly built coatings platform. The independent company starts with production, R&D and technical-service capabilities across established automotive and industrial markets rather than having to construct a global manufacturing system from the ground up.
Recent Surventis Investments and Technology Developments
Surventis entered independence with several investments already underway across the inherited BASF Coatings platform. In November 2025, the predecessor business commissioned a new automotive OEM coatings production plant at its Münster site. The facility was designed for high-volume automotive coating colors and greater production automation, strengthening the manufacturing platform that subsequently transferred to Surventis.
Investment has continued since independence. On July 30, 2026, Surventis announced two new testing lines at its Blackman Township, Michigan surface-treatment production site. The facilities expand North American pre-production testing and technical-support capabilities for Chemetall customers.
These developments illustrate where the new company's competitive emphasis is likely to sit: automation and manufacturing productivity in automotive OEM coatings, digitalization and workflow efficiency in refinish, and application testing and process integration in surface treatment.
Why Surventis Matters in the Global Coatings Industry
Surventis enters the coatings market as an unusual new corporate entity: newly independent, but already operating at multi-billion-euro scale. It begins with established automotive OEM relationships, major refinish brands, the Chemetall surface-treatment platform, a global manufacturing network and more than 42,000 customers.
Its portfolio also creates a differentiated position across the vehicle surface value chain. Surface Treatment addresses substrate preparation; Mobility Coatings participates in original vehicle coating; and Refinish Coatings serves the vehicle aftermarket. The resulting combination provides exposure to both automotive production and the recurring collision-repair market while extending into broader industrial applications through Chemetall.
The most important developments to monitor over the next several years will be standalone financial performance, investment priorities, manufacturing optimization, technology launches and potential portfolio changes under Carlyle-led ownership. Until Surventis publishes its first complete standalone financial year, predecessor BASF Coatings figures should be clearly distinguished from Surventis financial reporting rather than treated as directly comparable historical company accounts.
