The company's strategic differentiation rests on more than resin capacity. LyondellBasell participates from basic olefin production through polymer conversion and specialty compounding while also licensing proprietary polyolefin and chemical-process technologies and supplying catalysts to third parties. This creates exposure to both manufacturing economics and technology-based earnings. North American operations benefit from access to natural-gas-liquid feedstocks, while downstream Advanced Polymer Solutions businesses rely more heavily on formulation, compounding, color, reinforcement and customer qualification. LyondellBasell Business Structure and Competitive Position
LyondellBasell reports five continuing segments. Olefins and Polyolefins-Americas (O&P-Americas) produces olefins, polyethylene and polypropylene, with feedstock economics strongly influenced by North American natural-gas liquids. O&P-Europe, Asia, International (O&P-EAI) operates comparable chains across Europe and through international joint ventures. Intermediates & Derivatives (I&D) covers propylene oxide, oxyfuels, acetyls and associated derivative chemistries. Advanced Polymer Solutions (APS) produces compounds, engineering plastics, masterbatches and composites. Technology licenses proprietary process technologies and supplies catalysts. These models differ materially: olefins depend heavily on feedstock and operating rates, APS depends more on formulation and customer specification, while Technology monetizes intellectual property and technical services without requiring equivalent manufacturing capital.
Competitive advantage is therefore distributed across feedstock position, integration and process intellectual property. LyondellBasell develops and licenses polyolefin technologies, provides catalysts and technical support, and applies related expertise within its own manufacturing system. APS adds specialized compounding, reinforcement, color and performance-modification capabilities that require closer customer qualification, particularly in automotive and durable applications. I&D combines proprietary propylene-oxide routes with derivative manufacturing, creating multiple outlets for common feedstocks and co-products. Olefins & Polyolefins-Americas
O&P-Americas manufactures ethylene and co-products and converts olefin feedstocks into polyethylene and polypropylene. The segment's major structural advantage is access to North American natural-gas liquids, particularly ethane, which can provide competitive cracker economics relative to naphtha-based systems when regional feedstock spreads are favorable. Its polymer products serve packaging, consumer, industrial, construction and other applications. Integrated Gulf Coast manufacturing allows olefin production, derivative polymerization and logistics infrastructure to operate in close proximity. The business also provides a platform for incorporating renewable and recycled feedstocks into commercial polymer products, linking the conventional polyolefin franchise with LyondellBasell's developing Circular & Low Carbon Solutions strategy.
Olefins & Polyolefins-Europe, Asia, International
O&P-EAI produces olefins, polyethylene and polypropylene across European operations and participates in manufacturing joint ventures in Saudi Arabia, China, Poland, South Korea and Thailand. European crackers rely primarily on naphtha, although LyondellBasell has flexibility at selected assets to substitute liquefied petroleum gases for part of the feedstock slate. International partnerships provide access to regional feedstocks and downstream markets without requiring full ownership of every manufacturing platform. Following the 2026 disposal of several European O&P assets, the segment has a more concentrated footprint. Its remaining polymer operations continue serving packaging, construction, consumer and industrial markets while also providing the principal industrial base for the company's European circular-polymer investments.
Intermediates & Derivatives
I&D manufactures propylene oxide and derivatives, oxyfuels, acetyls and other intermediates. Propylene oxide is an important precursor to polyether polyols, propylene glycol, glycol ethers and related products used in polyurethane, coatings, personal-care, industrial and other formulations. LyondellBasell employs process routes in which propylene oxide is co-produced with tertiary butyl alcohol or styrene monomer; the tertiary butyl alcohol stream supports production of oxyfuels including MTBE and ETBE. The segment therefore operates as an interconnected chemical network rather than a portfolio of isolated molecules. Current product offerings also include grades of propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol serving industrial and formulation markets.
Advanced Polymer Solutions
APS converts base polymers into higher-value polypropylene compounds, engineering plastics, masterbatches, engineered composites, colors and performance materials. Automotive applications are particularly important for polypropylene compounds, where formulations can be tailored for stiffness, impact performance, appearance and weight reduction. Masterbatches provide color and additive functionality for packaging, agriculture and durable goods, while engineering plastics and composites address more demanding mechanical and thermal requirements. The business therefore competes through formulation knowledge, compounding technology, processing consistency and customer qualification rather than feedstock economics alone. This application-driven model gives LyondellBasell downstream exposure to performance requirements that are less directly correlated with commodity resin pricing.
Technology
The Technology segment develops and licenses chemical and polyolefin process technologies and sells associated catalysts to external producers. LyondellBasell supplies customized technology packages, start-up assistance, technical services and catalyst systems while maintaining internal research programs covering products, processes and catalyst development. The business is strategically important because technology developed for the company's own polymer and chemical operations can also generate licensing and catalyst revenue from third-party producers. It additionally supports process standardization and product development across LyondellBasell's manufacturing network. Compared with the operating segments, Technology requires substantially less commodity-production exposure and derives competitive value primarily from intellectual property, process performance, installed customer relationships and technical expertise.
LyondellBasell Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
North America remains central to LyondellBasell's olefins, polyolefins and intermediates network. Major U.S. locations include Channelview, La Porte, Bayport/Pasadena and other Texas Gulf Coast sites, supplemented by polymer operations in locations such as Clinton, Iowa and Morris, Illinois. The Gulf Coast cluster is strategically important because feedstock access, crackers, polymer plants and derivative chemical units can share logistics and infrastructure. LyondellBasell also maintains research and technical capabilities in the United States that support polymer, catalyst and process development.
Europe remains a major operating region despite recent rationalization. Continuing locations include integrated or specialized operations around Wesseling, Moerdijk, Rotterdam/Botlek, Knapsack, Frankfurt, Ferrara and other European manufacturing and technology centers. Wesseling has additional strategic relevance as the site of the company's first commercial-scale MoReTec catalytic-recycling plant. The European network serves regional packaging, automotive, construction and industrial customers while connecting conventional polymer manufacturing with circular-material development.
Outside Europe and North America, LyondellBasell combines owned commercial and technology infrastructure with joint ventures. O&P-EAI participates in manufacturing ventures in Saudi Arabia, China, Poland, South Korea and Thailand, while technical-support activities extend into markets including India and China. This partnership-led model gives LYB access to regional polymer markets and feedstocks without reproducing a fully owned manufacturing network in every geography.
LyondellBasell Divestitures, Circularity Investment and Portfolio Transformation
LyondellBasell has undertaken significant asset rationalization since 2024. During the second quarter of 2024, it completed the US$700 million sale of its Ethylene Oxide & Derivatives business and associated Bayport, Texas production facilities to INEOS. During the same period, LYB completed an approximately US$500 million investment for a 35% interest in Saudi Arabia's National Petrochemical Industrial Company (NATPET), adding exposure to an advantaged polypropylene plant in Yanbu using LyondellBasell's Spheripol technology.
Portfolio simplification continued in 2025–2026. The company ceased refining operations at Houston in February 2025, removing the Refining segment from continuing operations. On May 1, 2026, it completed the sale to AEQUITA of O&P assets in Berre, France; Münchsmünster, Germany; Carrington, United Kingdom; and Tarragona, Spain. LyondellBasell retained its Advanced Polymer Solutions activity in Tarragona. These actions concentrate capital on assets management considers better positioned structurally.
At the same time, LYB is investing in circular polymer technology. Construction is continuing on the MoReTec-1 facility at Wesseling, Germany, designed for approximately 50,000 tonnes per year of catalytic-recycling capacity and targeted for start-up in 2027. The company reported approximately 206,000 metric tons of recycled and renewable-based polymers marketed in 2025. Analytically, the combination of divestitures and circularity investment shows a portfolio strategy centered on reducing structurally weaker conventional assets while attempting to build differentiated polymer businesses around technology, circular feedstocks and application expertise.
