Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. Company Overview
Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. is a global coatings manufacturer headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and incorporated in Bermuda. The current holding company was incorporated in 2012 and the Axalta name was introduced in 2013 following the separation of DuPont Performance Coatings, while the underlying coatings heritage dates to 1866. Axalta develops liquid and powder coatings, automotive OEM systems, refinish technologies, industrial finishes, corrosion-protection materials, electrical-insulation coatings and associated color and application technologies. Its principal end markets include light and commercial vehicles, collision repair, industrial equipment, building products, electrical systems, pipelines and general manufacturing. The company operates as a focused coatings supplier rather than as part of a broader diversified chemicals portfolio.
Axalta's portfolio is positioned around two distinct customer models. Performance Coatings combines refinish and industrial applications, where distribution reach, color matching, formulation breadth and localized technical support are important. Mobility Coatings serves vehicle manufacturers through highly qualified coating systems embedded in OEM production processes. Across both platforms, Axalta combines materials science, color technology, application equipment and technical service. Its current operating emphasis includes productivity, manufacturing efficiency and technology investment while continuing to develop higher-performance and lower-environmental-impact coating systems.

Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. Business Structure and Competitive Position
Axalta manages its operations through Performance Coatings and Mobility Coatings, with segmentation based on customer concentration, distribution models, service requirements and product characteristics. Performance Coatings contains Refinish and Industrial. Refinish serves collision-repair shops through direct and distributor channels, while Industrial supplies liquid and powder coatings across diverse manufacturing applications. Mobility Coatings comprises Light Vehicle and Commercial Vehicle and works primarily with global vehicle OEMs. Its commercial model is more concentrated and technically integrated, with Axalta personnel frequently supporting coating processes directly at assembly plants. Performance Coatings therefore emphasizes distribution, color systems and fragmented end-market service, while Mobility relies more heavily on OEM qualification and long-term production-program relationships.
Competitive differentiation is driven by formulation capability, color science, application technology and customer-process expertise. Axalta maintains major technology centers in Philadelphia, Wuppertal, Shanghai and Mt. Clemens, supported by more than 20 development laboratories and approximately 1,300 technology-development personnel. Refinish customers require precise color matching, productivity and repair-cycle efficiency, while automotive OEMs demand consistent appearance, corrosion protection and high-speed application under tightly controlled manufacturing conditions. Axalta provides on-site technical representatives at many vehicle assembly facilities, creating direct feedback between customers, application teams and formulation scientists. This integration of chemistry, digital color tools and manufacturing-line support creates stronger qualification barriers than coating formulation alone.

Axalta's two operating segments generated combined segment adjusted EBITDA of $1.128 billion in FY2025. Performance Coatings represented approximately 64% of group sales, while Mobility Coatings contributed approximately 36%.
Performance Coatings
Performance Coatings comprises Refinish and Industrial, which generated FY2025 sales of $2.051 billion and $1.226 billion respectively. Refinish provides primer, basecoat, clearcoat, color-matching and associated coating systems to independent repair shops, multi-shop operators and distributors. Industrial technologies include liquid and powder coatings for building components, electrical systems, pipelines, transportation equipment and other manufactured products. Axalta sells Performance Coatings products in more than 140 countries through direct channels and more than 5,000 independent distributors. Differentiation centers on precise color reproduction, application productivity, durable surface performance and a broad technical-service network supporting fragmented regional customers.
Mobility Coatings
Mobility Coatings comprises Light Vehicle and Commercial Vehicle, which generated FY2025 sales of $1.438 billion and $402 million respectively. The business supplies coating systems to automotive and truck manufacturers for vehicle bodies and components, including primers, electrocoats, basecoats, clearcoats and specialty finishes. Axalta serves vehicle customers at more than 200 assembly plants globally, including nine of the ten largest global automotive manufacturers. The operating model requires close coordination with OEM production schedules, paint-shop conditions and quality standards. Axalta differentiates through coating-process expertise, color capability, localized manufacturing and technical teams positioned at customer facilities to monitor application performance and support manufacturing efficiency.
Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
Axalta's manufacturing network spans North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. North America includes facilities in Michigan, Iowa, Virginia, Texas, California and other U.S. locations, together with Canadian operations in Ontario. Mt. Clemens, Michigan, combines manufacturing with a major technology center, while Philadelphia houses the Global Innovation Center alongside the company's headquarters. These assets support refinish, industrial and automotive OEM customers across one of Axalta's largest regional markets.
Europe is anchored by Wuppertal, Germany, which supports both Performance and Mobility Coatings and also houses a major technology center. Other European manufacturing locations include facilities in Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Latin American production includes operations in Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico, including Tlalnepantla, which supports both major operating segments.
Asia-Pacific manufacturing includes multiple sites in China, together with facilities in India, Malaysia and Thailand. Shanghai serves as one of Axalta's four major technology centers, while Chinese manufacturing supports automotive OEM and industrial demand in a region that represented approximately 18% of FY2025 sales. The regional network is especially important for Mobility Coatings because OEMs require reliable just-in-time supply and local technical assistance. For Performance Coatings, local plants and training centers support faster product availability, distributor service and adaptation to regional application requirements.
Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation
Axalta's most significant current strategic development is its proposed all-stock merger of equals with AkzoNobel, agreed in November 2025. The transaction would create a coatings group with approximately $17 billion of combined revenue and an enterprise value of around $25 billion. AkzoNobel shareholders are expected to own 55% and Axalta shareholders 45% of the combined company, with approximately $600 million of targeted annual run-rate synergies. On August 5, 2026, shareholders of both companies approved the merger. Regulatory approvals and other closing conditions remain outstanding, with completion still expected in late 2026 to early 2027.
Before the merger agreement, Axalta expanded its Refinish platform through the July 2024 acquisition of The CoverFlexx Group for $290 million. CoverFlexx added economy-segment automotive aftermarket coatings and manufacturing operations in Brighton, Michigan, and Milton, Ontario.
Axalta has also implemented a multi-year transformation program initiated in 2024 to simplify its organization and manufacturing footprint. The program is expected to reduce the workforce by more than 500 positions and generate approximately $90 million of annualized net savings when fully implemented. Capital expenditure increased to $196 million in 2025, primarily reflecting productivity investments at manufacturing sites. The company has moved from standalone margin and productivity improvement toward a substantially larger strategic combination that, if completed, would broaden its portfolio beyond automotive, refinish and industrial coatings.
