Huhtamaki Oyj Business Structure and Competitive Position

Huhtamaki operates through four segments: Foodservice Packaging, North America, Flexible Packaging and Fiber Packaging. Foodservice Packaging covers foodservice paper and plastic products across Europe, Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa. North America combines foodservice, retail tableware and consumer-goods packaging for the regional market. Flexible Packaging operates globally across food, beverages, pet food, healthcare and personal-care applications. Fiber Packaging develops molded-fiber solutions including egg, fruit and foodservice products. The structure reflects different manufacturing technologies and commercial economics: Flexible Packaging is printing- and barrier-technology intensive, Fiber Packaging is fiber-forming and automation intensive, while foodservice operations rely heavily on high-volume conversion, customer service and regional logistics.

Competitive differentiation is based on converting technology, materials engineering, scale and close integration with customers' packing and foodservice requirements. Flexible structures must balance barrier performance, sealing, printing and machinability while increasingly meeting recyclability requirements. Molded fiber requires control of fiber composition, forming, drying and dimensional consistency, particularly for egg and fresh-produce packaging. Foodservice packaging adds regulatory, food-contact and high-volume manufacturing requirements. Huhtamaki's global footprint also allows multinational customers to source related formats across multiple regions while regional development teams adapt products to local regulations and end-use conditions. Its strongest competitive positions therefore combine application-specific material expertise with efficient production and customer qualification rather than relying on packaging volume alone.

Foodservice Packaging

Foodservice Packaging manufactures paper and selected plastic disposable food and beverage packaging for quick-service restaurants, coffee shops, catering businesses, foodservice operators and FMCG companies. Products include cups, containers and other formats designed around food contact, portioning, heat resistance and convenience. The business operates across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania and therefore faces differing packaging regulations and material-transition requirements. Huhtamaki is focusing on footprint optimization, automation, product expansion and sustainable-material innovation within the segment. FY2025 sales were €936.2 million and adjusted EBIT was €86.7 million.

North America

North America is Huhtamaki's largest segment by revenue and combines packaging for foodservice, retail and consumer-goods markets. The portfolio includes tableware, cups, folding cartons, carriers, containers, trays and other serviceware alongside packaging for branded consumer products. Its manufacturing model requires large regional scale because many formats are bulky and transport-sensitive, making plant location and distribution efficiency important competitive variables. The segment also provides Huhtamaki with a substantial platform for molded-fiber expansion as retailers and food producers move toward renewable egg and produce packaging. FY2025 sales totaled €1.405 billion, with adjusted EBIT of €163.1 million.

Flexible Packaging

Flexible Packaging supplies advanced structures for food, beverages, pet food, healthcare, personal care and industrial products. Technologies include printed films, laminates and pouch formats designed around barrier protection, sealing, product preservation and compatibility with customers' filling equipment. The segment has a particularly strong presence in emerging Asian markets while also serving multinational customers globally. Its technical challenge is increasingly to maintain product protection while reducing material complexity and improving recyclability. Profitability improved materially in 2025 following operational and portfolio actions: adjusted EBIT increased 22% to €115.1 million despite lower reported sales.

Fiber Packaging

Fiber Packaging produces molded-fiber solutions primarily for eggs, fresh produce and selected foodservice applications. Demand is supported by customers seeking renewable and recyclable alternatives to certain plastic packaging formats. Production requires specialized forming and drying equipment and efficient access to recycled or sustainably sourced fibers. The segment has manufacturing across Europe, Oceania, Africa and the Americas and has been a recent growth priority for Huhtamaki. FY2025 comparable sales increased 8%, while adjusted EBIT rose 16% to €50.4 million. The combination of volume growth and previous capacity investments made Fiber Packaging Huhtamaki's highest-margin segment in 2025.

Huhtamaki Oyj Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint

Huhtamaki's operating network spans Europe, North America, Asia, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, with production aligned closely to the requirements of individual packaging technologies. The United States is especially important to North America and molded fiber, while India is a major Flexible Packaging and Foodservice Packaging base. Germany is another significant employment and manufacturing market. Across Europe, production extends through countries including Finland, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Asia and Oceania contain flexible and foodservice operations in markets including India, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Australia and New Zealand. Huhtamaki has been consolidating selected Asian facilities to improve asset utilization while maintaining regional commercial coverage. Production in Africa includes fiber and foodservice operations in South Africa and fiber manufacturing in Egypt, while Latin American fiber operations include Brazil.

The footprint reflects the differing logistics of Huhtamaki's products. Flexible packaging can often serve broader regional markets from technically sophisticated plants, whereas molded-fiber and many foodservice products benefit from manufacturing closer to customers because of their volume-to-value ratio. Regional production also helps Huhtamaki adapt food-contact formats, barrier requirements and material choices to local legislation and recycling infrastructure. This combination of global technology platforms and localized converting capacity supports multinational accounts while retaining responsiveness to regional food and retail markets.

Huhtamaki Oyj Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation

Huhtamaki's most notable recent acquisition was Zellwin Farms Company, completed in April 2025 for an enterprise value of approximately $18 million. The Florida-based business generated around $20 million of annual sales and added molded-fiber egg-carton and egg-flat capacity in the southeastern United States. Huhtamaki explicitly linked the acquisition to growing demand for renewable and recyclable egg packaging as North American legislation and customer requirements shift material choices.

Organizationally, Huhtamaki separated its former Fiber Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania segment into Fiber Packaging and Foodservice Packaging from April 1, 2025. Management said the change was intended to sharpen accountability, increase execution speed and support profitable growth. The restructuring formed part of a broader efficiency program launched in 2023; Huhtamaki reported completing its targeted €100 million savings program ahead of schedule. During 2025, it also recorded a €39 million net impairment associated with further consolidation of Foodservice Packaging production.

These measures followed footprint rationalization during 2024, including closure of foodservice operations in Tianjin and Shanghai and transfer of production to Guangzhou, closure of Port Klang in Malaysia and consolidation of Flexible Packaging manufacturing in the UAE. Further Foodservice Packaging footprint optimization continued in 2026, producing an additional €16 million impairment in the first half.
