Arkema S.A. Company Overview
Arkema S.A. is a France-based specialty materials company headquartered in the Paris region, with its current corporate identity established following its separation from Total and stock-market listing in 2006. Arkema develops specialty adhesives, high-performance polymers, fluoropolymers and fluorospecialties, polyamides, thiochemicals, performance additives, coating resins, photocure materials, acrylics, hydrogen peroxide and other specialty materials. Its technologies serve building and construction, transportation, batteries, electronics, healthcare, consumer goods, packaging, coatings, sports and general industrial markets. Arkema generated €9.07 billion of sales in 2025 and is increasingly directing its portfolio toward higher-value materials linked to lightweighting, electrification, advanced manufacturing, sustainable packaging and lower-carbon technologies.
Arkema's strategic positioning has been reshaped through two decades of acquisitions, divestitures and organic investment. Its operating portfolio now consists of three Specialty Materials segments—Adhesive Solutions, Advanced Materials and Coating Solutions—and a separate Primary Materials segment introduced for reporting from 2026. Specialty Materials represented approximately 85% of 2025 sales on the revised basis. The structure distinguishes formulation-, application- and innovation-driven materials from larger-scale upstream activities such as acrylic monomers, hydrogen peroxide and legacy refrigerants. Arkema's differentiation therefore combines molecular and polymer design, application development and customer qualification with selected integrated manufacturing positions.

Arkema S.A. Business Structure and Competitive Position
Arkema's current structure separates three specialty-material platforms from Primary Materials, which was introduced with revised reporting from 2026. Adhesive Solutions operates primarily through Bostik across construction, consumer and industrial-assembly applications. Advanced Materials combines High Performance Polymers and Performance Additives, including specialty polyamides, PVDF, fluorospecialties, thiochemicals and other technically differentiated materials. Coating Solutions focuses on coating resins, specialty acrylates, photocure technologies and related formulation materials. Primary Materials contains global acrylic monomers, hydrogen peroxide and selected derivatives, together with legacy refrigerants that Arkema expects to progressively phase down. This segmentation separates application- and innovation-intensive businesses from activities whose economics are more strongly driven by industrial scale and chemical-cycle conditions.
Arkema's competitive model depends on combining materials science with qualification and application expertise. Specialty adhesives require knowledge of bonding, curing and substrate interactions; high-performance polymers compete on thermal, chemical, mechanical and electrical properties; and coating technologies increasingly rely on resin design, curing chemistry and compatibility with lower-emission formulation systems. The company also holds significant positions in specialized chemical chains such as thiochemicals and fluoropolymers. Arkema states that around 90% of its portfolio holds global positions between number one and number three. The more durable competitive advantages arise where market position is reinforced by proprietary chemistry, technically demanding manufacturing, customer qualification and application-development capabilities rather than scale alone.

Adhesive Solutions
Adhesive Solutions is centered on Bostik and serves construction, consumer, packaging and industrial-assembly applications. Technologies include hot-melt, pressure-sensitive, engineering, laminating, sealant and construction-adhesive systems used across building products, flexible packaging, hygiene, transportation and manufacturing. The operating model is substantially formulation- and application-driven, with product performance influenced by substrates, processing conditions, curing behavior and end-use durability. The segment's competitive differentiation comes from broad adhesive chemistry, local technical support and increasingly global positions in targeted industrial applications. Integration of Dow's flexible-packaging laminating adhesives business has further expanded Bostik's technology base in food, medical and industrial flexible packaging.
Advanced Materials
Advanced Materials combines High Performance Polymers and Performance Additives and represents Arkema's largest segment. Key technologies include specialty polyamides, PVDF, PEKK, polyimide films, fluorospecialties, thiochemicals, molecular sieves, specialty additives and materials used in advanced manufacturing. End markets include batteries, electronics, automotive, aerospace, healthcare, sports, renewable energy and industrial processing. Differentiation is based on high-performance material properties, polymer and fluorine chemistry, customer qualification and specialized process capabilities. Arkema has increasingly reinforced this segment through investments in battery materials, bio-based polyamide 11, high-performance polymers and electronic-material technologies, positioning it toward applications where material selection directly influences durability, weight, energy efficiency or device performance.
Coating Solutions
Coating Solutions supplies specialty materials used in architectural and industrial coatings, inks, adhesives and advanced curing systems. Its portfolio includes coating resins, specialty acrylates, photocure resins and additives that influence adhesion, durability, weather resistance, rheology and curing performance. The segment serves paint and coatings producers as well as formulators operating in construction, automotive, industrial finishing, electronics and printing applications. Following the 2026 segmentation revision, global acrylic monomers were transferred to Primary Materials, making Coating Solutions more concentrated on downstream specialty products. This increases the segment's exposure to formulation expertise, customer-specific performance requirements and higher-value curing and resin technologies rather than upstream acrylic-cycle economics.
Primary Materials
Primary Materials contains Arkema's larger-scale chemical activities that are strategically distinct from the three Specialty Materials segments. The segment includes global acrylic monomers, hydrogen peroxide and certain derivatives, and legacy refrigerants. Acrylic monomers are essential feedstocks for coatings, adhesives, construction products and other polymer applications, while hydrogen peroxide serves pulp and paper, chemical processing, electronics and environmental applications. Legacy refrigerants are increasingly affected by regulatory phase-down schedules, differentiating their long-term profile from Arkema's next-generation fluorospecialties. The segment's competitive economics depend more heavily on asset utilization, energy and feedstock costs, regional supply-demand balances and industrial-scale operating efficiency than the customer-specific formulation models used across Arkema's specialty businesses.
Arkema S.A. Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
Arkema's production network is geographically balanced across Europe, North America and Asia, supporting both integrated chemical production and localized specialty-material supply. At the end of 2025, the company reported 154 production plants, including 65 in Europe, 44 in North America, 32 in Asia and 13 across other regions. France remains an important technology and manufacturing base for high-performance polymers, adhesives, coating technologies and specialty chemicals, while the wider European network supports specialty-material and upstream chemical value chains.
North America is strategically important across adhesives, fluoropolymers, thiochemicals, coatings and industrial specialty materials. Arkema's Calvert City, Kentucky operation is a significant PVDF platform, while U.S. investments have also strengthened next-generation fluorospecialties and thiochemical production. The company's acquisition-led expansion in adhesives has added production assets serving packaging and industrial customers across the United States and Mexico.
Asia combines established chemical production with increasingly important high-performance materials platforms. China supports PVDF, photocure materials, additives and multiple specialty chemical chains, while Singapore is an important base for bio-based polyamide 11 and related materials. South Korea has become strategically important following Arkema's investment in PI Advanced Materials, which produces ultra-high-performance polyimide films. This footprint enables Arkema to manufacture qualification-sensitive materials close to major electronics, battery and automotive supply chains while maintaining regional production for more traditional industrial customers.
Arkema S.A. Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation
Arkema's most significant recent acquisition was the December 2024 purchase of Dow's flexible-packaging laminating adhesives business for an enterprise value of US$150 million. The acquired business generated approximately US$250 million in annual sales and brought five production sites across Italy, the United States and Mexico. Its technologies serve food, medical and industrial flexible-lamination applications and materially broaden Bostik's position in packaging adhesives. Arkema expects technological, commercial and manufacturing synergies from combining the acquired business with Bostik's existing platform.
In Advanced Materials, Arkema completed the acquisition of a 54% controlling stake in South Korea-based PI Advanced Materials in December 2023. PIAM supplies polyimide films used in flexible printed circuits, displays, electronics and electric mobility, adding an ultra-high-performance polymer platform to Arkema's existing portfolio. The company subsequently acquired nearly 78% of Austrian ionic-liquids specialist Proionic in April 2024, strengthening its position in next-generation battery-material technologies.
Portfolio pruning continues alongside these acquisitions. In December 2025 Arkema proposed selling a European plastic-additives activity, including its Vlissingen plant in the Netherlands, to Praana while retaining selected American activities. The company has also recast its segment structure from 2026 by moving acrylic monomers, hydrogen peroxide and legacy refrigerants into Primary Materials. These actions reinforce Arkema's long-term direction: concentrate investment and acquisition capital on adhesives, advanced polymers, coating technologies and other differentiated materials while separately managing larger-scale or structurally lower-growth chemical activities.
