Ecolab Inc. Business Structure and Competitive Position
Ecolab's 2025 reporting structure consists of Global Water, Global Institutional & Specialty, Global Pest Elimination and Global Life Sciences. Global Water incorporates Light & Heavy industrial water, Food & Beverage and Paper activities and contains the major Nalco Water platforms. Global Institutional & Specialty serves restaurants, hotels, food retail, healthcare and other institutional environments; healthcare activities were moved into Institutional from 2025. Global Pest Elimination delivers prevention and monitoring services across commercial markets, while Global Life Sciences provides cleaning, contamination-control and purification technologies for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and personal-care manufacturing. The structure separates asset- and process-intensive industrial water applications from hygiene, pest and regulated life-science markets while allowing commercial collaboration through Ecolab's One Ecolab model.
Ecolab's competitive position is based less on bulk chemical manufacturing than on the combination of chemistry, digital control, process knowledge and recurring on-site service. In water treatment, 3D TRASAR and related monitoring systems allow chemical dosing and operating conditions to be adjusted using real-time data. Life-science customers require validated cleaning and purification technologies under regulated manufacturing conditions, while hospitality and healthcare customers value reliable sanitation, dispensing and service. Nalco Water additionally operates directly inside many customers' industrial processes, increasing switching complexity because treatment programs can influence corrosion, scaling, heat transfer, water consumption and production continuity simultaneously. Its extensive installed digital base gives Ecolab a proprietary operating-data layer that reinforces field expertise and customer qualification.

Global Water / Nalco Water
Global Water is Ecolab's largest segment and the primary reporting home for Nalco Water. The segment includes Light & Heavy industrial water, Food & Beverage and Paper businesses. Technologies address cooling and boiler systems, raw-water treatment, wastewater, process chemistry, membranes, corrosion, scaling and microbiological control. Customers span manufacturing, chemicals, refining, power, primary metals, mining, pulp and paper, food processing, semiconductors and data centers. Nalco Water's differentiation lies in pairing specialty chemistry with on-site engineering, connected monitoring and measurable operational outcomes. Global Water generated $7.982 billion of FY2025 sales and $1.333 billion of reported operating income.
Global Institutional & Specialty
Global Institutional & Specialty serves restaurants, hotels, commercial foodservice, food retail, schools, long-term care and healthcare facilities. Offerings include warewashing systems, detergents, dispensing equipment, kitchen and housekeeping sanitation, food-safety programs, hospital environmental hygiene and instrument-reprocessing solutions. The segment differs from industrial water because the installed equipment is typically smaller and customer operations are more distributed, requiring an extensive field-service organization. Ecolab's healthcare business has been included within Institutional since 2025 following the divestiture of Surgical Solutions. FY2025 sales totaled $6.105 billion and operating income reached $1.386 billion.
Global Pest Elimination
Global Pest Elimination provides commercial pest-prevention and treatment programs across foodservice, hospitality, food manufacturing, retail and other regulated or brand-sensitive environments. The business combines site inspection, treatment chemistry, exclusion measures, monitoring technology and service protocols intended to prevent infestations rather than rely solely on reactive pest treatment. Customer relationships can be particularly durable in food and hospitality markets because pest incidents create regulatory, safety and reputational risks. Digital monitoring and pest-intelligence investments are expanding the data component of the service model. FY2025 sales increased to $1.246 billion, while operating income reached $242.9 million.
Global Life Sciences
Global Life Sciences supplies pharmaceutical, biotechnology and personal-care manufacturers with cleaning, disinfection, contamination-control and purification technologies. Products and services are used in highly regulated manufacturing environments where validated procedures, documentation, material compatibility and repeatable cleaning performance are essential. The segment also includes Purolite purification technologies used in bioprocessing and other demanding separation applications. Life Sciences became a standalone reportable segment from 2025, reflecting Ecolab's view of the business as a distinct long-term growth platform. FY2025 sales were $747.9 million and operating income increased to $136.0 million.
Ecolab Inc. / Nalco Water Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
Ecolab combines company-operated chemical and equipment manufacturing with a much larger field-service, research and customer-site network. North America remains central to the company. St. Paul houses global headquarters; the Eagan, Minnesota campus supports research, training and administrative functions; and Naperville, Illinois is a major Nalco Water administrative and research center. Nalco Water manufacturing includes Garyville, Louisiana, a reaction facility producing water-treatment chemical blends and polymers.
Europe contains manufacturing, technical and commercial infrastructure across countries including Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Spain and the UK. Current Nalco Water location records identify manufacturing operations at Biebesheim, Germany, Tesjoki in Finland and other specialized facilities. Regional research and administrative centers include Monheim, Germany and Leiden, Netherlands.
Asia-Pacific is particularly important to Ecolab's water and high-tech strategy. Nalco Water maintains a major Asia-Pacific technical presence in Singapore and a broad China network including Shanghai, Suzhou and other industrial centers. India combines technical, commercial and manufacturing operations, including Pune. The footprint matters because water treatment is inherently site-specific: chemistry must be adjusted to local water quality, process conditions and customer equipment. Ecolab therefore relies on regional manufacturing for dependable chemical supply while engineers and digital systems provide continuous optimization directly at customer facilities.
Ecolab Inc. Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation
Ecolab has redirected its portfolio toward water, digital technology and high-growth life-science and high-tech applications. In August 2024, it completed the sale of its global Surgical Solutions business to Medline for approximately $950 million in cash. Ecolab retained hospital environmental hygiene and instrument-reprocessing activities, arguing that these businesses better fit its recurring chemistry, equipment and service model.
The largest subsequent investment was the acquisition of Ovivo's Electronics ultrapure-water business, completed in December 2025. Ovivo Electronics provides ultrapure-water technologies used in semiconductor manufacturing. Ecolab is integrating that platform with Nalco Water's water treatment, digital monitoring and service capabilities to address water purification, recycling and reuse across semiconductor fabs. The transaction more than doubled the size of Ecolab's Global High-Tech growth platform at closing.
Ecolab extended that strategy further in July 2026 by completing the acquisition of CoolIT Systems, a specialist in direct liquid cooling for high-density data centers. Management now positions Global High-Tech across the AI infrastructure chain—from ultrapure water required to manufacture semiconductors to liquid cooling and water management in data centers—and said the platform was approaching $1.5 billion of annualized sales by July 2026.
Alongside portfolio transactions, Ecolab has been implementing its One Ecolab restructuring and digital operating model, including greater use of global centers of excellence and process automation. These actions shift Ecolab's growth mix toward technically demanding water, semiconductor, AI-infrastructure and bioprocessing applications while retaining its large recurring hygiene and institutional-service franchises.
