Kemira Oyj Business Structure and Competitive Position

Kemira has operated through three business units since January 1, 2025: Water Solutions, Packaging & Hygiene Solutions and Fiber Essentials. Water Solutions is the largest unit and serves municipal and industrial water treatment and mining applications. Packaging & Hygiene Solutions was separated from the former Pulp & Paper segment to concentrate resources on paper, board, packaging, tissue and emerging renewable-fiber applications. Fiber Essentials contains chemistry essential to pulp production, particularly sodium chlorate and bleaching-related technologies. Water-treatment chemicals must perform reliably across changing raw-water quality, treatment infrastructure and regulatory conditions, while pulp and paper chemistry interacts directly with fiber properties, machine operation and final material performance. Kemira combines chemical production with application expertise and digital process optimization, creating customer relationships that extend beyond basic molecule supply. Regulatory know-how is increasingly significant as utilities address micropollutants and PFAS and packaging manufacturers redesign fiber structures for recyclability and reduced plastic content. The three business units generated total FY2025 revenue of €2.7535 billion and operative EBITDA of €524.6 million. Water Solutions accounted for approximately 44% of revenue, Packaging & Hygiene Solutions 35% and Fiber Essentials 20%.

Water Solutions

Water Solutions supplies chemistry and services used across municipal drinking water, wastewater, industrial water treatment and mining. The portfolio is centered on inorganic coagulants and water-soluble polymers, which support clarification, solids separation, sludge handling and resource-efficient treatment. Kemira has particularly strong positions in Europe and North America and estimates sizeable regional shares in both coagulants and polymers. The business is being expanded into more service-intensive industrial applications through acquisitions, while activated carbon is adding another treatment technology for micropollutants. FY2025 revenue was €1.222 billion and operative EBITDA reached €262.9 million, giving the unit the largest absolute earnings contribution within Kemira.

Packaging & Hygiene Solutions

Packaging & Hygiene Solutions serves producers of paper, board, tissue and other fiber-based products. Its chemistry influences strength, stiffness, drainage, sizing, barrier performance and machine productivity, allowing customers to reduce fiber usage, substitute fiber for selected plastics or develop lighter packaging structures. Kemira is also targeting newer applications including molded fiber, man-made cellulosic textile fibers and bio-based barrier technologies. The business is more application-development intensive than Fiber Essentials because formulations must interact with specific furnish, coating and production conditions. FY2025 revenue totaled €970.2 million and operative EBITDA was €115.9 million.

Fiber Essentials

Fiber Essentials supplies critical chemicals used principally in pulp production and bleaching. Sodium chlorate is its largest business and is converted by pulp producers into chlorine dioxide for elemental-chlorine-free bleaching. The unit also provides associated process chemistry to pulp manufacturers, giving Kemira significant exposure to major fiber-producing regions such as the Nordics and South America. Unlike Packaging & Hygiene Solutions, where differentiation is concentrated in final paper and board properties, Fiber Essentials has a more process- and manufacturing-intensive model with competitiveness influenced by energy, electricity and production efficiency. FY2025 revenue was €561.9 million and operative EBITDA reached €145.7 million, corresponding to the strongest operative EBITDA margin among Kemira's three business units.

Kemira Oyj Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint

Kemira's manufacturing network spans Europe, North America, South America and Asia-Pacific, with production positioned close to water utilities and major pulp, paper and board customers. Europe is the company's historical and technological center. Finland hosts important chemical production at locations including Äetsä and Oulu, while Sweden's long-established Helsingborg complex supports multiple water and process chemistries. Germany's Dormagen facility is an important coagulant platform serving municipal and industrial water-treatment customers across Germany, France and Benelux.

North America is central to Kemira's water-growth strategy. Existing coagulant and polymer manufacturing gives the company regional supply for municipal and industrial customers, while recent service acquisitions are adding local field capabilities. South America is particularly important to pulp chemistry, reflecting the region's large eucalyptus-pulp industry. Asia-Pacific supports paper, board and packaging customers through regional chemical production and application capabilities; Kemira has also been expanding strength-chemical capacity in Thailand for growing APAC packaging demand.

The network's economics vary by chemistry. Coagulants are typically manufactured relatively close to consumption because transportation economics favor regional supply, while sodium chlorate production benefits from integration with electricity-intensive pulp clusters. Specialty paper and packaging chemicals require technical support close to mills so formulations can be adjusted around furnish, machine configuration and desired end-product performance.

Kemira Oyj Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation

Kemira's recent portfolio actions have reinforced its transition toward water and renewable fiber chemistry. The company completed the sale of its Oil & Gas-related portfolio to Sterling Specialty Chemicals in February 2024, removing a business with different market dynamics and increasing the relative importance of water and fiber applications.

Water-related acquisitions accelerated in 2025. Kemira acquired Thatcher Group's U.S. iron sulfate coagulant business and, in October, completed the approximately $150 million acquisition of Water Engineering, Inc. Water Engineering brought more than $60 million of expected 2025 pro-forma revenue and expanded Kemira from chemistry supply into industrial boiler, cooling-water and wastewater services.

The bolt-on strategy continued rapidly in 2026. Kemira acquired AquaBlue in January, followed by Clear Water Technologies in June and ANMAC Water Treatment Service in July, extending Water Engineering's service platform in the United States. In Europe, it agreed to acquire German coagulant producer SIDRA Wasserchemie for approximately €75 million and completed the acquisition of Italian activated-carbon reactivation specialist REPUR in August.

Organic investment supports the same direction. Kemira approved a low-double-digit-million-euro activated-carbon reactivation plant at Helsingborg and is expanding specialty chemistry capacity at Äetsä. The portfolio strategy is increasingly clear: strengthen core water-treatment chemistry, add recurring service capabilities and build higher-growth treatment technologies while retaining profitable fiber chemistry as a complementary platform.
