Mondi plc Company Overview
Mondi plc is a UK-registered international packaging and paper company with major operating activities across Europe, North America and Africa. The group develops corrugated packaging, containerboard, paper bags, kraft paper, consumer flexible packaging, functional paper and films and uncoated fine paper. Its products serve e-commerce, food and beverages, pet food, consumer packaged goods, building materials, chemicals, agriculture, industrial products and publishing and office-paper applications. Mondi operates a vertically integrated model extending from forestry and wood sourcing through pulp and paper production to packaging conversion. The group reported €7.663 billion of revenue and €1.001 billion of underlying EBITDA in 2025.
Mondi's strategic positioning combines integrated paper production with downstream packaging conversion, giving it exposure to both raw-material economics and higher-value customer-specific packaging. The company reorganized its operations during 2025 into two business units—Corrugated Packaging and Flexible Packaging—to simplify decision-making and capture operational synergies. Its portfolio spans fiber-based and flexible packaging technologies, allowing Mondi to address packaging redesign across different substrates rather than being tied to a single material platform. Current priorities include operational excellence, cash generation, cost competitiveness and extracting returns from a recently completed major capital-investment cycle.

Mondi plc Business Structure and Competitive Position
Since October 1, 2025, Mondi has operated through two business units: Corrugated Packaging and Flexible Packaging. Corrugated Packaging now combines the former corrugated business with Uncoated Fine Paper, bringing containerboard, corrugated converting, pulp, forestry and fine-paper operations under a single management platform. Flexible Packaging remains separately organized around kraft paper, paper bags, consumer flexible packaging and functional paper and films. Vivien McMenamin leads Corrugated Packaging and Thomas Ott leads Flexible Packaging within Mondi's current Executive Committee. The two businesses differ operationally: Corrugated Packaging is highly integrated around fiber and box production, while Flexible Packaging combines upstream kraft-paper economics with multiple converting technologies.
Mondi's competitive position derives from vertical integration, cost-positioned paper assets, converting expertise and packaging application development. In 2025, approximately 73% of its paper capacity was positioned in the first or second quartile of relevant industry cost curves, according to company analysis using external market data. The integrated system allows internal flows of pulp, containerboard and kraft paper into converting plants while retaining selective external sales. Packaging engineers can then optimize structure, printing, barrier performance and material efficiency for individual customers. Mondi's breadth across corrugated and flexible formats is particularly relevant as brand owners evaluate fiber, paper-based barriers and flexible structures against evolving recyclability and packaging-regulation requirements.

Mondi's current segment presentation reflects the 2025 reorganization. Corrugated Packaging generated a 12.1% underlying EBITDA margin and Flexible Packaging a 14.8% margin in FY2025. Corporate costs reduced consolidated underlying EBITDA to €1.001 billion.
Corrugated Packaging
Corrugated Packaging integrates virgin and recycled containerboard, corrugated converting, uncoated fine paper, market pulp and forestry activities. In 2025 Mondi produced approximately 2.6 million tonnes of containerboard and 2.4 billion square metres of corrugated solutions, alongside 0.9 million tonnes of uncoated fine paper. End markets include e-commerce, food and beverages, FMCG, agriculture and industrial transportation packaging. Its differentiation comes from integration between pulp, paper and converting, combined with structural packaging design and increasingly sophisticated digital printing. The addition of Schumacher Packaging assets expanded solid-board and high-capacity corrugated capabilities, particularly in Western Europe.
Flexible Packaging
Flexible Packaging combines kraft paper, paper bags, consumer flexible packaging and functional paper and films. Mondi produced approximately 1.3 million tonnes of kraft paper and 5.9 billion paper bags in 2025, alongside about 1.8 billion square metres of consumer flexibles and 3.0 billion square metres of functional paper and films. Applications include pet food, food packaging, e-commerce, cement and building materials, industrial products and consumer goods. The business differentiates through integrated kraft-paper production, coating and barrier technologies, printing and converting expertise. Its multi-material capabilities allow Mondi to develop both flexible polymer-based structures and paper-based alternatives according to product-protection and recyclability requirements.
Mondi plc Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
Mondi operates more than 100 production sites in over 30 countries, with its principal industrial clusters concentrated in Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe, South Africa and selected North American markets. The group's integrated value chain includes 14 mills and 91 converting plants across its principal packaging platforms, supplemented by forestry assets, paper-recycling inputs and externally sourced materials.
Central Europe is particularly important to Mondi's upstream paper system. Major mills include Štětí in the Czech Republic, Świecie in Poland and Ružomberok in Slovakia, supported by extensive corrugated and paper-bag converting operations across Germany, Poland, Türkiye and other regional markets. The Štětí site manufactures pulp and kraft paper and started production on its new PM10 machine during 2025. South Africa provides an integrated forestry, pulp and uncoated-fine-paper base, while the group's European mills benefit from access to wood, biomass and established fiber infrastructure.
North America is smaller but strategically relevant for paper bags and specialty packaging. Mondi opened a new highly automated paper-bag facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in April 2026, consolidating production previously located at Wellsburg, West Virginia, and Oakdale, Pennsylvania. The overall footprint allows upstream paper production to be concentrated around competitive fiber and energy resources while converting plants remain closer to customers. That distinction is important because paper manufacturing benefits from scale, whereas finished packaging requires shorter lead times and regional technical support.
Mondi plc Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation
Mondi's largest recent transaction was its acquisition of Schumacher Packaging's Western European corrugated converting and solid-board operations, completed on March 31, 2025 for €506 million in cash. The acquisition added more than one billion square metres of packaging capacity and included major high-productivity plants in Ebersdorf and Greven, Germany. Strategically, the deal strengthened Mondi's Western European corrugated position, expanded its solid-board offering and increased exposure to e-commerce and FMCG customers. Integration subsequently produced additional identified cost synergies beyond the initial acquisition case.
The transaction coincided with completion of a major organic investment cycle. Mondi's PM10 kraft-paper machine at Štětí began production in 2025, increasing the group's sack-kraft-paper capability, while earlier investments expanded corrugated converting operations in markets including Poland. After this period of elevated capital expenditure, management has shifted toward asset productivity and cash generation.
Portfolio rationalization intensified during 2026. Mondi announced further converting-plant closures across Corrugated Packaging and Flexible Packaging, while its half-year accounts recognized major impairments associated principally with the Duino recycled-containerboard mill in Italy, Neusiedler uncoated-fine-paper operations in Austria and the Schwarzenberg solid-board mill in Germany. The company also reached an agreement to dispose of the remaining assets and liabilities of its fire-damaged Stambolijski mill in Bulgaria, with completion expected during the second half of 2026.
