PPG Industries, Inc. Company Overview
PPG Industries, Inc. is a U.S.-headquartered paints, coatings and specialty-products company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1883 as Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, PPG has transformed from a diversified glass and chemicals producer into a coatings-focused materials company. Its technologies now span architectural paints, aerospace coatings and transparencies, automotive OEM and refinish coatings, protective and marine systems, packaging coatings, industrial liquid and powder coatings, traffic markings, sealants and specialty surface technologies. PPG serves construction, aerospace, automotive and transportation, consumer products, packaging, infrastructure and general industrial markets. The company generated $15.875 billion of net sales from continuing operations in 2025, following the divestiture of its U.S. and Canadian architectural coatings operations and silicas business in late 2024.
PPG's current strategic positioning is increasingly concentrated on coatings and specialty surface technologies where formulation, application expertise and customer qualification support differentiation. Its three segments combine architectural coatings outside the U.S. and Canada with technically demanding transportation, aerospace and industrial coatings. The portfolio ranges from branded decorative paints sold through retail and dealer networks to highly engineered aerospace and automotive systems integrated into customers' manufacturing processes. This mix gives PPG exposure to both consumer-facing brands and specification-driven B2B markets while reducing its historical exposure to non-coatings specialty materials.

PPG Industries, Inc. Business Structure and Competitive Position
PPG operates through three reportable segments. Global Architectural Coatings includes decorative and architectural paints principally across Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific following the exit from U.S. and Canadian architectural coatings. Performance Coatings contains aerospace, automotive refinish, protective and marine, and traffic-solutions businesses, where products frequently require substantial technical support or customer qualification. Industrial Coatings comprises automotive OEM, general industrial and packaging coatings. The structure separates relatively brand- and distribution-led architectural businesses from performance applications where coating specifications are closely integrated with customers' assets or manufacturing processes.
PPG's high-level competitive positioning rests on coatings formulation, surface science, color capability, customer qualification and global application support. Automotive OEM coatings must integrate with pretreatment, electrocoat, primer and topcoat processes at vehicle plants; aerospace coatings and sealants require stringent durability and regulatory performance; packaging coatings must satisfy food-contact, processing and increasingly bisphenol-related requirements; and protective systems are engineered for corrosive environments. These characteristics make process knowledge and technical-service infrastructure strategically important alongside manufacturing scale. PPG's architectural operations add another source of differentiation through established regional brands, dealer relationships and color systems. The result is a portfolio in which proprietary chemistry is reinforced by customer specification, application know-how and lifecycle technical support.

PPG's three segments generated combined FY2025 segment EBITDA of $3.057 billion. Performance Coatings had the highest segment EBITDA margin at 23.3%, followed by Global Architectural Coatings at 18.4% and Industrial Coatings at 16.4%.
Global Architectural Coatings
Global Architectural Coatings supplies interior and exterior paints, stains and related products primarily across Mexico and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. The portfolio includes established regional brands and incorporates Tikkurila's strong Nordic and Eastern European presence. Unlike PPG's industrial businesses, differentiation depends heavily on brand equity, distribution, contractor and consumer relationships, color capabilities and localized product positioning. Manufacturing must also accommodate large numbers of formulations, pack sizes and color requirements close to regional markets. The segment generated $3.838 billion of sales and $708 million of EBITDA in 2025. Following the U.S. and Canada divestiture, PPG's architectural portfolio is more geographically concentrated in markets where it believes it holds stronger competitive positions.
Performance Coatings
Performance Coatings includes aerospace coatings, automotive refinish, protective and marine coatings, and traffic solutions. These are among PPG's most specification-intensive businesses. Aerospace products include coatings, sealants, transparencies and engineered materials, while refinish systems require color matching and body-shop productivity support. Protective and marine technologies address corrosion, chemical exposure and demanding service environments, and traffic products support pavement marking and road-safety applications. Customer qualification and technical service create meaningful barriers to substitution, particularly in aerospace and marine applications. Performance Coatings generated record 2025 sales of $5.513 billion and segment EBITDA of $1.282 billion, supported by particularly strong growth in aerospace and protective and marine coatings.
Industrial Coatings
Industrial Coatings comprises automotive OEM coatings, general industrial coatings and packaging coatings. Its technologies are incorporated directly into customer production lines, making application efficiency, cure characteristics, surface appearance, corrosion resistance and consistency important purchasing criteria. Automotive systems span coatings used across vehicle manufacturing, while general industrial applications include appliances, equipment, consumer products and fabricated materials. Packaging coatings protect metal food, beverage and specialty containers and increasingly incorporate next-generation technologies designed to satisfy changing regulatory and customer requirements. The segment generated $6.524 billion of sales and $1.067 billion of EBITDA in 2025. PPG reported share gains during the year, particularly in packaging and automotive OEM coatings, despite generally weak global industrial production.
PPG Industries, Inc. Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint
PPG operates a globally distributed coatings manufacturing, technology and customer-service network covering North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and other international markets. The United States remains important for aerospace, automotive, industrial, packaging, traffic and specialty coatings, even after PPG's exit from its U.S. and Canadian architectural paint business. Pittsburgh remains the corporate and technology center, while manufacturing and technical operations are distributed near major automotive, aerospace and industrial clusters. PPG reported approximately 42,500 employees worldwide in early 2026, including about 11,000 in the U.S. and Canada, 16,000 in EMEA, 8,500 in Latin America and 7,000 in Asia-Pacific.
Europe has become strategically important through both long-standing industrial operations and the Tikkurila platform. Finland and other Nordic markets support architectural coatings, while PPG also operates automotive, aerospace and industrial coatings facilities across countries including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. The region provides proximity to aircraft manufacturing, vehicle assembly, industrial customers and established decorative-paint markets.
Latin America is particularly important to Global Architectural Coatings, led by PPG's Comex platform in Mexico, while Brazil supports automotive and industrial coatings. Asia-Pacific manufacturing and technical facilities serve major automotive, electronics, industrial and marine markets in China and elsewhere in the region. PPG's geographic model is strategically important because coating formulations frequently need regional manufacturing, local technical support and direct integration with customer production environments. That requirement is strongest in automotive, aerospace, packaging and industrial coatings, where application-line performance can matter as much as the coating chemistry itself.
PPG Industries, Inc. Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation
PPG executed two major portfolio exits in late 2024 that materially changed its reporting base. In November 2024, it completed the sale of its precipitated silicas products business to QEMETICA for approximately $310 million in pre-tax proceeds. The transaction included manufacturing sites in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Delfzijl, the Netherlands, as well as leased manufacturing and R&D operations at other PPG locations. The business represented roughly 1–2% of PPG's 2023 sales. PPG positioned the disposal as a means of concentrating resources on coatings and specialty products rather than performance-additive chemistry.
In December 2024, PPG completed the $550 million sale of its architectural coatings business in the U.S. and Canada to American Industrial Partners. That operation had generated approximately $2 billion of 2023 sales but only a low-single-digit EBITDA margin. Its disposal removed brands and manufacturing assets associated with the North American decorative-paint business while PPG retained architectural operations in Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Financial reporting subsequently classified the divested operation as discontinued operations.
Investment has simultaneously shifted toward higher-growth coating technologies. PPG is investing $380 million in a new aerospace coatings and sealants manufacturing facility in Shelby, North Carolina, reflecting strong aerospace demand and capacity requirements. The company is also executing European manufacturing consolidation and broader structural-cost actions, with $75 million of savings realized in 2025 and another $50 million expected during 2026. The portfolio direction is clear: PPG is allocating capital away from structurally lower-return or non-core businesses and toward technically differentiated coatings where qualification, application expertise and customer relationships support stronger returns.
