RPM International Inc. Company Overview

RPM International Inc. is a U.S.-based manufacturer of specialty coatings, sealants, building materials and related chemical products headquartered in Medina, Ohio. Founded in 1947, RPM operates through a collection of specialist businesses and brands serving construction, infrastructure, industrial maintenance, consumer DIY, flooring, fireproofing, waterproofing, corrosion protection and other performance applications. Major technologies include protective coatings, roofing systems, sealants, concrete admixtures and repair materials, resinous flooring, fireproofing, wood-care coatings, aerosols, caulks, adhesives and household cleaning products. Its brands include Tremco, Euclid Chemical, Dryvit, Nudura, Carboline, Stonhard, Rust-Oleum, DAP, Zinsser, Varathane and The Pink Stuff. RPM generated a record $7.863 billion of net sales in fiscal 2026, its latest completed financial year ended May 31, 2026.

RPM's strategic position differs from highly centralized coatings manufacturers. It owns multiple entrepreneurial operating companies with strong category brands while progressively centralizing selected procurement, manufacturing, IT and administrative processes. Effective June 1, 2025, RPM simplified its structure from four segments to three: Construction Products Group, Performance Coatings Group and Consumer Group. The change absorbed the former Specialty Products Group businesses into the remaining platforms to increase commercial coordination and operating synergies. This model allows RPM to preserve specialist brands and technical expertise while using shared operational systems to improve margins, supply-chain efficiency and cross-selling.

RPM International Inc. Business Structure and Competitive Position

RPM operates through Construction Products Group, Performance Coatings Group and Consumer Group. Construction Products Group addresses the building envelope, infrastructure restoration, concrete, roofing and façade markets through businesses including Tremco, Euclid Chemical, Dryvit and Nudura. Performance Coatings Group supplies industrial and commercial protective coatings, resinous flooring, fireproofing, food-related coatings and other engineered solutions through businesses such as Carboline and Stonhard. Consumer Group includes Rust-Oleum, DAP, Zinsser, Varathane, The Pink Stuff and related brands sold through home centers, hardware, mass retail, e-commerce and professional channels. The three-segment structure has applied since June 1, 2025 following the dissolution of the former Specialty Products Group.

RPM's competitive positioning combines category-specific technical expertise with strong professional and consumer brands. Construction products frequently form integrated systems rather than isolated products, allowing RPM to sell roofing, waterproofing, wall, concrete and restoration solutions together with warranties and technical services. Performance coatings require substrate knowledge, corrosion protection, chemical resistance and application expertise, creating specification and qualification barriers. Consumer products depend more strongly on brand recognition, retail distribution and ease of application. RPM's MAP operating-improvement initiatives increasingly provide a common operational backbone across these otherwise decentralized businesses, improving procurement, manufacturing utilization and administrative efficiency without fully eliminating the entrepreneurial structure that historically drove acquisitions and category specialization.

RPM International Inc. Business Segments and Revenue Analysis

RPM used adjusted EBIT as its principal non-GAAP segment performance measure through FY2026. Starting in FY2027, management has shifted its primary profit measure to adjusted EBITDA, but FY2026 segment reporting is therefore most consistently presented using adjusted EBIT.

Corporate/Other adjusted EBIT was negative $166.1 million, bringing consolidated FY2026 adjusted EBIT to $1.019 billion.

Construction Products Group

Construction Products Group provides systems for the construction, restoration and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure. Technologies include roofing membranes and restoration systems, waterproofing, sealants, concrete admixtures and repair products, insulated wall systems, façade products and structural solutions. Major brands include Tremco, Euclid Chemical, Dryvit and Nudura. The group's operating model increasingly emphasizes system selling, combining complementary materials and services into complete building-envelope or infrastructure packages. This can reduce installation complexity and support warranty-based customer relationships while increasing RPM's share of project spending. FY2026 net sales reached $3.070 billion and adjusted EBIT increased to $473.1 million, supported by demand for high-performance building and infrastructure solutions.

Performance Coatings Group

Performance Coatings Group supplies engineered coatings and surface systems for industrial, commercial and infrastructure environments. The portfolio includes corrosion-resistant coatings, resinous flooring, fireproofing systems, specialty polymer coatings and food-related coating and ingredient technologies. Brands such as Carboline and Stonhard are positioned in applications where material selection depends on chemical resistance, durability, hygiene, fire performance or severe-service conditions. These businesses frequently sell through specification-led channels and direct technical relationships rather than conventional consumer distribution. FY2026 segment sales were $2.132 billion, while adjusted EBIT reached $321.5 million. Growth was supported by high-performance buildings, infrastructure projects and emerging markets.

Consumer Group

Consumer Group contains many of RPM's best-known retail and professional brands, including Rust-Oleum, DAP, Zinsser, Varathane and The Pink Stuff. Products span spray paints, protective and decorative coatings, caulks, sealants, adhesives, patch-and-repair materials, wood stains and finishes, household cleaners and related products. The segment operates through home centers, hardware stores, mass merchants, e-commerce, grocery and professional distribution channels. Its differentiation is driven by brand equity, retail shelf position, new-product development and ease-of-use innovation rather than long industrial qualification cycles. FY2026 net sales rose to $2.662 billion and adjusted EBIT reached $391.7 million, with acquisitions offsetting continued softness in portions of the DIY market.

RPM International Inc. Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint

RPM operates approximately 120 manufacturing locations, with products marketed in roughly 167 countries and territories. North America remains the group's largest operating base and supports the majority of its construction, protective-coatings and consumer brands. The U.S. network includes facilities producing coatings, sealants, concrete technologies, flooring materials, roofing products, aerosols and other building and maintenance solutions. Proximity to contractor and industrial customers is particularly important because many RPM products are system-based, project-specific or supported by technical field service.

Europe represents an increasingly important platform for construction and performance coatings. RPM owns manufacturing and commercial businesses across the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France and other regional markets. Its April 2026 acquisition of Kalzip added a Germany-headquartered metal roofing and façade platform, complementing Tremco Construction Products Group's existing building-envelope technologies.

RPM also manufactures in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, India, Australia and South Africa. Emerging markets produced double-digit sales growth in the fourth quarter of FY2026, driven in part by high-performance building and infrastructure demand. The geographic network supports a business model in which local manufacturing and technical service are important for construction chemistry, flooring and protective coatings, while global brand platforms and formulations can be replicated across regional markets. Unlike commodity chemical networks, RPM's plants are generally tied to specialized finished products and system solutions rather than large upstream feedstock integration.

RPM International Inc. Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation

RPM's most important recent organizational change was the June 1, 2025 restructuring from four operating segments to three. The former Specialty Products Group was dissolved, with Industrial Coatings and Food businesses transferred to Performance Coatings, Color moved into Consumer, and Legend Brands placed within Construction Products. RPM said the realignment was intended to improve synergies and growth opportunities across related businesses. The shift is consistent with a broader move toward greater operating coordination after decades in which individual acquired companies operated with substantial independence.

Acquisition activity has remained active. RPM completed the purchase of Star Brands Group, parent of The Pink Stuff, on May 1, 2025, adding the fast-growing household-cleaning brand to Rust-Oleum's Consumer Group portfolio. In June 2025, RPM announced the acquisition of Ready Seal, expanding its exterior wood-care position. The company subsequently completed its acquisition of Kalzip GmbH on April 1, 2026, adding engineered aluminum roofing and façade systems to Tremco Construction Products Group and expanding its European building-envelope capabilities.

RPM has simultaneously continued structural cost programs. Its MAP initiatives have consolidated plants, optimized SG&A, improved procurement and restructured shared processes, contributing to repeated adjusted EBIT records despite uneven construction and DIY markets. Fiscal 2026 included additional restructuring costs related to MAP and newer optimization actions.

Leadership was also adjusted in 2026. David Dennsteadt, previously a senior operating executive and former Performance Coatings Group leader, became President and Chief Operating Officer in July, creating a broader operating role beneath Chairman and CEO Frank Sullivan. RPM's current transformation is less about exiting major businesses than about integrating acquisitions more effectively, concentrating the portfolio into three platforms and using shared systems to extract greater profitability from a historically decentralized collection of brands.
