The Sherwin-Williams Company Overview

The Sherwin-Williams Company is a U.S.-headquartered global manufacturer, developer and distributor of paints, coatings and related products. Founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1866, the company supplies architectural coatings, industrial finishes, protective and marine coatings, packaging coatings, automotive refinishing systems, coil coatings, wood coatings and associated products. Its customer base includes professional painters, contractors, industrial manufacturers, construction companies, automotive repair businesses, packaging producers, retailers and consumers. Sherwin-Williams combines coatings formulation and manufacturing with one of the industry's largest controlled distribution networks: its Sherwin-Williams branded architectural products are primarily sold through company-operated stores, while additional brands and industrial technologies use retail, dealer, distributor and direct-customer channels. FY2025 consolidated net sales reached $23.574 billion.

The company's strategic positioning rests on three complementary platforms: Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands Group and Performance Coatings Group. Paint Stores Group provides direct access to professional painting contractors and other architectural customers through controlled distribution. Consumer Brands combines branded coatings and related products sold through third-party retail channels and international architectural businesses. Performance Coatings serves industrial and specification-driven markets using technically engineered coating systems. This combination differentiates Sherwin-Williams from coatings suppliers that rely principally on third-party distribution: the company pairs formulation and manufacturing expertise with direct customer relationships, color infrastructure, logistics, application support and a large proprietary retail footprint.

The Sherwin-Williams Company Business Structure and Competitive Position

Sherwin-Williams operates through three reportable segments with distinct go-to-market models. Paint Stores Group manufactures and sells Sherwin-Williams branded architectural and related products principally through company-operated stores and branches, creating direct relationships with professional contractors. Consumer Brands Group supplies branded and private-label products through retailers, home centers, independent dealers and other channels and now includes Suvinil's Brazilian architectural coatings operations. Performance Coatings Group supplies industrial coatings for packaging, transportation, protective and marine, general industrial, coil, wood and automotive-refinish applications. This architecture combines direct distribution, consumer retail exposure and specification-led industrial sales without forcing each market into the same commercial model.

Sherwin-Williams' competitive positioning is built around the interaction of coating technology and distribution infrastructure. In architectural coatings, its controlled-store model provides proximity to professional painters, product availability, tinting and color support, and localized service. Industrial coatings depend more heavily on substrate expertise, curing technology, corrosion resistance, regulatory compliance and customer line qualification. The company also integrates coatings formulation with global supply-chain and manufacturing capabilities. This creates two different forms of customer stickiness: professional architectural customers can become embedded in a store-service ecosystem, while industrial customers may face technical and operational costs when changing approved coating systems. Its technology base spans resin, pigment, additive, curing and application know-how across multiple substrate and end-use environments.

The Sherwin-Williams Company Business Segments and Revenue Analysis

Sherwin-Williams reports segment profit rather than segment EBITDA as its primary segment earnings measure. The table therefore uses officially reported FY2025 segment profit rather than attempting to estimate segment EBITDA.

Paint Stores Group

Paint Stores Group is Sherwin-Williams' largest and most profitable operating segment. It primarily serves professional painting contractors, residential repaint, commercial construction, property maintenance, new residential construction and selected protective and marine applications through company-operated stores. At year-end 2025, the group operated 4,853 stores, providing direct control over product assortment, inventory, tinting, delivery and customer service. The business is differentiated not only by coating formulation but by distribution density and professional-customer relationships. Local availability matters because contractors frequently require color consistency, rapid replenishment and job-site support. FY2025 Paint Stores Group sales were $13.606 billion and segment profit was $3.062 billion, with sales growth led by areas including protective and marine, residential repaint and commercial markets.

Consumer Brands Group

Consumer Brands Group supplies architectural paints, stains, aerosols, wood-care products and related coatings through mass merchants, home centers, independent dealers, hardware retailers and other third-party channels. Its portfolio includes established brands such as Valspar, Dutch Boy, Krylon, Minwax, Cabot and Thompson's WaterSeal alongside private-label programs. The segment's geographic profile expanded materially in October 2025 through the addition of Suvinil and Glasu! in Brazil. Unlike Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands relies more heavily on retailer partnerships, brand management, merchandising, manufacturing efficiency and consumer product innovation. FY2025 sales were $3.166 billion and segment profit was $509.6 million. Core North American DIY demand remained soft during the year, while the Suvinil acquisition contributed incremental fourth-quarter growth.

Performance Coatings Group

Performance Coatings Group provides highly engineered coatings for general industrial, packaging, automotive refinish, coil, industrial wood, aerospace, and protective and marine applications. Customers include manufacturers, fabricators, packaging converters, transportation companies and asset owners operating equipment and infrastructure under demanding service conditions. The segment's differentiation is primarily technical rather than retail-driven: coating selection can depend on corrosion protection, appearance, cure speed, regulatory requirements, chemical resistance, substrate compatibility and manufacturing-line productivity. Qualification and application support therefore play a central role in customer relationships. Performance Coatings operates internationally and serves customers in more than 120 countries. FY2025 sales totaled $6.795 billion and segment profit was $942.7 million; Packaging was a notable growth area despite otherwise mixed industrial demand.

The Sherwin-Williams Company Global Manufacturing and Geographic Footprint

Sherwin-Williams combines a global manufacturing and distribution network with unusually dense customer-facing infrastructure. The company reports more than 130 manufacturing and distribution facilities, while its store and branch network provides a separate layer of localized inventory and technical access. The United States and Canada are especially important to Paint Stores Group, where controlled distribution creates direct links between production, distribution centers and professional contractors.

North American manufacturing supports architectural paints as well as packaging, industrial, protective, automotive and wood-coating technologies. The company's operational model uses both company-owned manufacturing and selected toll manufacturing, sourcing a broad range of monomers, polymers, surfactants, solvents, epoxies, isocyanates and packaging materials. This manufacturing base is complemented by Sherwin-Williams' new Morikis Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio, which serves as an innovation center for architectural and multiple industrial coatings technologies.

Outside North America, Sherwin-Williams maintains manufacturing and commercial operations across Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Brazil is an increasingly important architectural-coatings market following the integration of Suvinil's two manufacturing facilities, while Performance Coatings uses a broader international network to support automotive, packaging, general industrial and protective customers. Regional production matters because coatings are often formulation-, color- and logistics-intensive products; local manufacturing can improve responsiveness, reduce freight exposure and allow technical teams to work directly with customer coating lines and application environments.

The Sherwin-Williams Company Mergers, Divestitures and Portfolio Transformation

Sherwin-Williams' largest recent completed portfolio transaction was its $1.15 billion acquisition of BASF's Brazilian architectural paints business, completed on October 1, 2025. The acquired business includes the Suvinil and Glasu! brands and generated approximately $525 million of sales in 2024. It also brought approximately 1,000 employees and two manufacturing facilities in Brazil. Sherwin-Williams integrated the operation into Consumer Brands Group. Strategically, the transaction increases its exposure to the Brazilian architectural-coatings market and adds a strong regional brand and distribution position rather than merely adding production capacity.

The company simultaneously completed a major internal investment cycle. Its new global headquarters in downtown Cleveland and Morikis Global Technology Center in Brecksville represented a minimum construction investment of $860 million. Teams began moving into the facilities during 2025, and the technology center formally celebrated its grand opening in July 2026. The project centralizes corporate functions and creates a dedicated global innovation platform for architectural and industrial coatings.

A potentially much larger transaction was explored during 2026 but did not proceed. Sherwin-Williams and Nippon Paint Group jointly proposed acquiring AkzoNobel, with Sherwin-Williams envisaged to acquire AkzoNobel's Marine & Protective Coatings, Automotive & Specialty Coatings and Powder Coatings operations. After AkzoNobel rejected the proposals, Sherwin-Williams and Nippon Paint announced on June 3, 2026 that they had ended their pursuit. The episode is strategically relevant because it indicates Sherwin-Williams' willingness to pursue significant expansion in premium industrial-coatings categories, but it should not be represented as an acquisition or pending transaction. Current portfolio transformation therefore rests primarily on Suvinil integration, ongoing operational restructuring and commercialization of the company's expanded technology and distribution infrastructure.
