Packaging Solutions is centered on carton packaging systems for ambient and chilled food and beverages. Tetra Pak Investments, Innovation and Portfolio Development
Tetra Pak's recent strategic development is driven more by technology investment and packaging-system redesign than by large acquisitions or divestitures. One of its most important current programs is the development of aseptic carton packages using a paper-based barrier instead of the conventional aluminum-foil layer. A 2025 commercial launch with García Carrión extended the technology into juice packaging, with the carton containing up to 80% paper and, when combined with plant-based polymers, up to 92% renewable material content. Further commercial validation expanded into white milk during 2026.
In January 2026, Tetra Pak announced a €60 million investment in a new paper-based barrier pilot plant in Lund, Sweden. Production and customer trials are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The investment forms part of an approximately €100 million annual commitment through 2030 to develop more sustainable packaging solutions. Tetra Pak separately reported investing around €100 million in research, development and industrialization of new carton technologies during 2025 and a further €42 million in collection and recycling infrastructure.
The company is also investing in carton recovery and sorting technologies. Projects during 2025 included AI-supported carton sorting and wider collection and recycling infrastructure initiatives in Europe.
